Geomembraneleakscanbecausedbypoorqualityofthesubgradepoorqualityofthematerialplacedonthegeomembraneaccidentspoorworkmanshipandcarelessness.

Themostsignificantcausesofleaksingeomembranesthatarecoveredwithonlywaterarerelatedtoconstructionactivitiesincludingpumpsandequipmentplacedonthegeomembraneaccidentalpuncturesandpuncturescausedbytrafficoverrocksordebrisonthegeomembraneorinthesubgrade.

Themostsignificantcauseofleaksingeomembranescoveredwithearthmaterialsisconstructiondamagecausedbymachinerythatoccurswhileplacingtheearthmaterialonthegeomembrane.Suchdamagealsocanbreachadditionallayersoftheliningsystemsuchasgeosyntheticclayliners.

Electricalleaklocationmethodsareaneffectivefinalqualityassurancemeasuretolocatepreviouslyundetectedormissedleaks.

1.1Thesepracticesdescribestandardproceduresforusingelectricalmethodstolocateleaksingeomembranescoveredwithwaterorearthmaterialscontainingmoisture.

1.2Thesepracticesareintendedtoensurethatleaklocationsurveysareperformedwithdemonstratedleakdetectioncapability.Toallowfurtherinnovationsandbecausevariousleaklocationpractitionersuseawidevarietyofproceduresandequipmenttoperformthesesurveysperformance-basedoperationsareusedthatspecifytheminimumleakdetectionperformancefortheequipmentandprocedures.

1.3Thesepracticesrequirethattheleaklocationequipmentproceduresandsurveyparametersusedaredemonstratedtoresultinanestablishedminimumleakdetectionsensitivity.Thesurveyshallthenbeconductedusingthedemonstratedequipmentproceduresandsurveyparameters.

1.4Separateproceduresaregivenforleaklocationsurveysforgeomembranescoveredwithwaterandforgeomembranescoveredwithearthmaterials.Separateproceduresaregivenforleakdetectionsensitivitytestsusingactualandartificialleaks.

1.5Leaklocationsurveyscanbeusedongeomembranesinstalledinbasinspondstanksoreandwastepadslandfillcellslandfillcapsandothercontainmentfacilities.Theproceduresareapplicableforgeomembranesmadeofmaterialssuchaspolyethylenepolypropylenepolyvinylchloridechlorosulfonatedpolyethylenebituminousmaterialandotherelectrically-insulatingmaterials.
